Large-format structural machining often demands massive floor space and extensive foundation reinforcement. The Zimmermann FZU22 portal milling machine challenges this convention by packing a high-speed, 5-axis overhead gantry architecture into a compact 11 by 15-foot footprint. Engineered for lighter-weight applications, this machine processes versatile materials including aluminum, plastics, wood, and advanced carbon-fiber-reinforced composites.

The machine features an expansive working envelope to handle sizable molds and aerospace components. Travel spans 71 to 98 inches in the X-axis, 118 to 138 inches in the Y-axis, and 49 inches in the Z-axis. Rapid movement is a core strength, with the system delivering a standard feed rate of 2,756 inches per minute along the horizontal axes, backed by peak acceleration rates up to 197 inches per second squared. This dynamic performance is regulated by either a Siemens or Heidenhain CNC system, maintaining precision certified to ISO 230-2 standards.

At the cutting zone, a specialized 5-axis milling head paired with a 15-kilowatt spindle maneuvers smoothly through complex contours and deep, restrictive pockets. Operators can customize the platform with a choice of milling heads to suit specific workpieces.

To expand its utility, the configuration can integrate optional tool changers for up to 24 tools, touch probes, laser tool-measurement units, and automated chip and dust extraction systems. A specialized ultrasonic cutting head option further broadens its capabilities, allowing the machine to precisely slice through delicate aerospace insulation materials without fraying.
