T and O X-Max End Mills Shred Tough Steels and Alloys While Slashing Tooling Costs
Travers Tool Co. has expanded its lineup with the T&O X-Max™ solid carbide end mill series, targeting machine shops looking to balance tight-tolerance precision with tight tooling budgets. Instead of chasing overpriced premium brands, these mills offer a cost-effective alternative built to withstand the punishing heat and abrasion of difficult materials.
The core of the series relies on a 12% cobalt substrate. This material formulation delivers the necessary structural toughness to resist edge chipping under heavy loads. Protecting that edge is an Aluminum Chromium Nitride (AlCrN) coating, which creates a slick, thermal barrier against intense zone heat. This combination extends tool life when milling through tool steels, stainless, die materials, and gummy nickel-based superalloys like Inconel.
For high-mix shops running repetitive parts, accuracy comes down to predictable tool wear and strict manufacturing standards. These end mills hold an ultra-tight diameter tolerance of 0 / -0.0008". That consistency means fewer offsets, predictable tool-path programming, and repeatable surface finishes across long production runs.
The series is currently stocked and available in three distinct configurations:
- 4-Flute Square: Optimized for rigid peripheral milling, finishing, and high-surface-footage slotting.
- 2-Flute Square: Engineered with deep flutes for aggressive pocketing and maximum chip evacuation in roughing stages.
- 2-Flute Ball Nose: Tailored for complex 3D profiling, die cavity work, and fluid contouring.
Future additions to the line will include corner radius options and dedicated tooling sets, allowing shops to standardize their difficult-material operations on a more economical platform.
